Paper boats, every child made them by folding news paper and refolding it until the final step of opening the square package of folds into a boat (or hat). The paper boat is light, navigates according to the wind. Its joyful display is also ephemeral, and allows for many associations with feelings about existence.
The work grouped under this title expresses thoughts about joy, its life giving energy and its superficiality. The underlying forms are taken from paper boats at the various developmental stages of folding. Sometimes they are drawn large to give the painting its structure, sometimes they are drawn small and become components of a structure. The variations on the theme tend to become more abstract as the work progresses and the association with boats gets weaker. |
